Ponnani port to get a Shipbuilding yard soon
The government of Kerala is planning to develop a large shipbuilding yard at the Ponnani port in Kerala. This proposed yard will be developed in a public-private partnership (PPP) and will be the second largest in the state after Kochi.
It will be established on about 29 acres of coastal land on the western side of the Ponnani Fishing Harbour, and initially the focus will be on building small vessels. Phase 1 would take an investment of around Rs 200 crores.
Further, a shipbuilding-related training institute will also be set up, and cargo-handling operations are planned to begin soon after the shipyard becomes operational.
