Thermal power generation: Government plans to add 97,000 MW by 2035
The government is planning to develop 97,000 megawatt coal and lignite-based thermal capacity by 2034-35. As per The Economic Times, the plan is aimed at meeting the anticipated 3,07,000 MW requirement by 2035.
Minister of State for Power Shripad Naik, while speaking in Parliament, said that several initiatives have already been undertaken in this direction. He said thermal capacities of around 18,160 MW have already been commissioned by January 31, 2026. Further, 38,745 MW of thermal capacity, including 4,845 MW of stressed thermal power projects, is currently under construction.
